Problem

Human Resources (HR) is a critical part of any organization. But for small businesses across the United States, it can be hard to know where to start. Traditionally, these businesses had few options that met their needs at price points they could afford. Without the right HR solution, the majority of businesses with under 50 employees were left to find workarounds for new hire onboarding, compliance management, performance feedback, and more.

Enter Bambee, a solution that automates top HR practices and provides a dedicated HR manager for small businesses. Bambee provides key HR services, like new hire onboarding, policy creation, record retention, staff compliance training, employee coaching, and routine HR audits. It was a huge win for small business owners, but there was one key element missing—payroll.

After hearing their customers’ strong desire for payroll within the Bambee platform, Allan Jones, CEO, and Matt Goldsmith, SVP of Operations, set off to find the right payroll solution. They quickly discovered that building a solution from scratch would be too expensive and time-consuming. But, alternative third-party payroll referral options would result in a disjointed experience for their customers. To avoid requiring separate logins between HR and payroll, Bambee knew they would need to find a way to embed payroll natively in their platform. That’s when they discovered Check.

Solution

After meeting with the Check team, Jones and Goldsmith were confident that a partnership was imminent. Not only did the technology match their needs, but they saw strong alignment between Check and Bambee’s company values. The Check API would enable Bambee to offer a payroll product that perfectly matched the Bambee brand, and the Check team would work alongside them to build, launch, and scale a payroll business that could exceed their customers’ expectations.

After just five months, Bambee was able to launch Bambee Guided Payroll, the first-ever payroll product with built-in HR guidance. This is critical for small businesses, who can be forced to close if they make a payroll related mistake due the high fines and legal fees that can come with payroll errors.

In addition, Bambee chose to offer a free year of payroll for companies with less than 20 employees. For more mature small companies, they priced for ‘70% under the market average rate at a flat $4 per employee, with no monthly company fee’.

Customer Impact

Embedded payroll has helped Bambee expand their all-in-one value proposition for small business HR, acting as a catalyst for product adoption and growth. Just a few months after launch, Bambee Guided Payroll surpassed initial adoption goals by 2x. Their customers provided ecstatic feedback around being able to meet all of their HR needs from one platform.

Beyond solving a key pain point for their customers, Bambee Guided Payroll provided an additional benefit: increasing employee engagement in the app. All Bambee customers have access to an app where employees can share how they’re feeling at work, report harassment issues, or talk to someone if they’re unhappy. Bambee discovered that employees at small businesses who use Bambee Guided Payroll are 30X more likely to log into the Bambee app. While they initially open the app to view their pay stubs, they also tend to report issues, log how they are feeling, and more. For Bambee, this dramatic increase in app usage was another key benefit of implementing an embedded payroll solution.

Looking Ahead

Bambee’s vision is to continue to provide more value to small businesses, including benefits, 401K, and more equitable pay for their customer’s employees. Bambee sees their partnership with Check and payroll offering as the first of many steps towards this reality.

Initially we thought Check was just a product that would help us break into payroll faster. Over time, we found that Check isn’t just a product, they’re actually a partner. They are helping us figure out how to increase time-to-value for our customers.
