One Million People Paid

Check has officially paid over 1 million people.
When we launched Check in 2019, it seemed nearly impossible to figure out how to pay ourselves — nevermind millions of others. That first paycheck felt so high-stakes. It was one payroll run, but it carried the weight of everything we were trying to build.
Now, seven years later, we have crossed a milestone that’s hard for me to wrap my head around: Check has paid over 1 million people. One million people have relied on our partners to run payroll correctly and on time, and our partners have trusted us to deliver. It’s a number that looks great in a headline, but what it really represents is something much bigger: we’ve become meaningful infrastructure for a significant portion of the American workforce.
But crossing 1 million people paid didn’t happen because of a single breakthrough. It happened because of years of unglamorous, obsessive work to build the hard parts of payroll infrastructure that nobody thinks about until they absolutely have to: calculation of thousands of taxes and preparation of thousands of tax forms, integrations with hundreds of federal, state, and local tax agencies, payments systems with multiple layers of redundancy capable of moving tens of billions of dollars a year, and the risk and compliance systems to do all of that safely and accurately.
Our Partners
Most of all this milestone is a testament to our partners and the products they’ve built that have allowed millions to rely on our infrastructure. Our success is just a measure of theirs.
The ever-expanding list of industries and use cases our partners now serve is something we hoped for when starting Check but never could have fully envisioned. We got our start supporting partners who serve local small businesses, and there’s a good chance the barista at your daily coffee shop or the waitstaff at your favorite restaurant are now paid through Check. We’re proud of those roots, and SMBs of all types continue to be the bedrock of our business.
But over the years our partners have opened our eyes to the pain and complexity of larger enterprises with more difficult workforce scenarios — from complex national construction businesses, to farms with migratory labor forces, and even local governments with unique rules that they write for themselves. We’re proud to have built the flexibility and capabilities for Check to serve all of these and more.
From one employee to thousands, Check now has you covered.
What’s Next: Infrastructure for Agents as AI Reshapes the Workforce
While we’re proud of this milestone, it also highlights how early we still are. There are tens of millions of businesses in the U.S. and hundreds of millions of workers. Payroll remains fragmented, outdated, and painful for far too many of them.
Just as importantly, over the next decade we expect huge sectors of our economy to be reorganized by and around AI. We expect this to accentuate the pain felt by businesses managing their teams with legacy systems, and to accelerate demand for new, specialized solutions. I'm proud that Check is powering some of the first AI-native workforce management platforms and I expect many more to come.
To our partners: thank you for trusting Check to power your payroll businesses. To our team: thank you for doing the hard work that makes this possible. And to the 1,000,000 and counting workers who’ve been paid through Check: thank you for trusting us with your money and your taxes. We’re just getting started.
